HELSINKI

Curator: Egle Oddo is a visual artist who has distractedly curated several collective programmes across Europe, India, USA and Russia.
"I play with narrative structures as an art form, using different media. While experimenting I wish to divert from my own path, and realise cultural alternatives. I am one, I am many."

Egle Oddo's work consists in discovering and telling stories. "Always it is fragments that I collect from situations apart and lives afar, I knead them, blow on them, and that's when they sing together as a quire. My senses are voracious. I dig away the floor in hidden archives, sometime recovering the recipe of meals eaten by medieval poets, and gorging like an ant bear. I interbreed digital textures with analogue film supports, if I need photography. As sculptor, I forge the mechanism for an army of plant-seeds' catapults. My environmental-art pieces lately consist of collective telepathic exercises, which seems a consistent way to prevent more trash in the ecosystem. The gathering of selected trashes is itself a great part of my work. I collage, or melt, or write, merging together the fragments. And when it appears it is done.

I see the arts influencing collective imagination powerfully, and I perceive them as a non-violent opportunity to change History."

Her work has been shown at Venice Biennale, Museum Soares dos Reis, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Manege gallery State Museum Hermitage, Finnish Museum of Photography, Baltic Biennale, Transmediale, EMMA Museum of Modern Art Espoo, Russian State Museum of Ethnography, Loop Barcelona, National Centre for Contemporary Arts Moscow. Since 2005 she lives and work in Helsinki, where she founded Namastic Art Collective, a non-profit organization dealing with exhibitions, workshops and events. She is member of Pixelache, Catalysti and  Muu association of artists in Finland.

  NOCTURNE

Anu Aamu Aurora Pulkkinen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s401ouRHooQ
Music by Benjamin Britten, words by W. H. Auden.
Produced in Helsinki 2015 during the project How to Inhabit a Transitory Space.
Presented for first time at Pixelache festival, Living Spaces 2015.

This is a video-performance inspired by an archive film showing war scenes documented in Estonia during Second World war. The artist has observed those silent scenes on a screen while she was playing the piano and singing Nocturne. She recorded her own live performance on digital. In her video the archive film is contaminated with the screen frequencies, producing the colourful stripes seemingly seen on TV. This visual feature actualises the scenes up to our present.

”While the splended and the proud
Naked stand before the crowd
And the losing gambler gains
And the beggar entertains.”

Project: How to Inhabit a Transitory Space, Helsinki 2015.

Louse is an introspection. The camera witnesses the attempt of the author to put order in her own thoughts and memories. The experiment ends with her reconciliation with childhood.

Screened for first time at AAVE Alternative Audiovisual Event in 2015.

The video is an intrusion in the private life of an artist mocking the austerity politics era in her performance.

”The share value evaporates like spirit
History is built from re-asked questions

What does a man do with money
Go to work!

Living is not a honorable profession
How to live pleasing those who think my best

I think my best
I think my best”

Text by Joni Pyysalo

  FEEL

Juste
https://vimeo.com/142251899
Music:  Goldberg Variations BWV 988, by J. S. Bach performed by Shelley Katz.
Project: How to Inhabit a Transitory Space, Helsinki 2015.

Artist page: http://jste.tumblr.com/

In his visual research Juste often works with constructed narrative fragments. In his early photographic production he has realised a series of book covers for books that have never been written. By offering these fragments to the viewer he provides a context for immagination, leaving his spectators free to construct the missing elements and details.

The video work FEEL seems to be purely an ending of a film, the rest of the story and the narrative connections are missing. It is docufiction where we follow a girl in an urban burgoise context, meeting her friends, and observing the city life from a lonely point of view.  The gestures she has seen in public places emerge in her subjective memory, while the words and dialogues are absent from the recollection of the situations. The music chosen from the Goldberg Variations adds complexity to the visual and emotional layering. The Variation 21 is known for its sense of finality and solemnity.

Iran/Finland 2014-2015

"One Ocean is an experimental film that I investigate reviving my childhood  memories of the sea  while having the dialogue with my mother. Her memories of the sea before and after revolution

in Iran and her memories combined with my childhood memories are the core of the film.  It is  showing the reality of my life after my migration to Finland and its affect on my mother. The film  is about the affection between the mother and child and intellectual type of displacement and its consequences."

  IMPERMANENCE & UNFINITY

Ionas Laine
https://youtu.be/qe9f6GLVeDs

Project: How to Inhabit a transitory Space, Helsinki 2015.

Ionas Laine is a visual artist working often with arcane symbology, combining video performance, butoh dance and ritualistic gestures. In Impermanence & Unfinity s/he has first composed a soundscape and following its pace s/he has then formed a visual sequence about trans-species body transformation. The journey unfolds in three segments. At beginning digitalized images of biological forms float gracefully in the water moving their monochromatic coils. Then a masculine body performs a ritual in an urban context, deleting its own features inside white dust. In the end the human body and the wildlife merge creating a new identity.

  THE APOSTLE

Juhani Koivumäki
www.juhanikoivumaki.com
Single-channel visual projection, sound stereo, 16:9, duration 4':26'', Helsinki 2015

Juhani Koivumäki’s The Apostle is a metaphorical media-art work reflecting on Jesus of Nazareth as a radical figure of Christianity. Using video art to recover the sense of radical spirituality in the biblical stories of Jesus Christ, Koivumäki seeks to reconnect art with spirituality and mysticism, in the context of the changing needs
and pressures of contemporary society and its institutions.

According to the mystic G.I Gurdjieff (1866-1949), many texts and sacraments in the Bible were meant to be interpreted directly and literally. Gurdjieff strongly emphasises the difference of the culture of that time and place, when compared to contemporary culture. He asserts that the Christian religion lost much of its radical strength when it was adopted into the commonly accepted order of society. During the lifetime of Jesus, blood had the sacred meaning of carrying part of the spirit of the one having it streaming inside. According to Gurdjieff, the apostles shared Jesus’ blood when He sensed that he would soon be taken away.
I found it important to show the situation explained above. Da Vinci’s painting of the Last supper represents a common mental image of Jesus’ final moments. It seems that most of the people connect contradictory thoughts and ideas to this image and Christian religion itself. Much have to do with different political agendas running after the death of Jesus of Nazareth.

  SOLITUDE SILENCE

Thomas Bjelkeborn & Michael Larsson
https://vimeo.com/32206815

Solitude Silence has a desolate setting, it is vast and empty at the same time as there are movements occupying the visual and audible space. A white washed-out surface and the slow structures of sound has no less characteristics than one which is busy. In this, there is an emergence of a being embodied with the space. One can sense dislocation and perceive disappearance. The movement however, being utterly organic and integrated with space, provides layers of continuity of a different time.

  YOU DON´T EXIST ANYMORE

Clément Beraud and Minna Nurmi
Project: How to Inhabit a Transitory Space
Helsinki 2015

You don't exist anymore is an experimental, documentary video by Clément Beraud and Minna Nurmi, which examines the nature, the human, the non-human and their complex relations. The video follows the struggle of a yucca plant against the challenging weather conditions of Finland. The ritualistic repetition of observing the plant during five days, develops an unique relationship between us, while blurring the boundaries of nature and human. The act of planting and the video work itself represents our aim to understand the responsability and the power we use in our everyday actions towards our environment. This video searches and observes the obscure borderline of human and non-human, deconstructs and creeps these two more close to each other. This endless negotiation continues while human keeps on searching his place in his environment.

MUSIC_OF ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

V ictor Khashchanskiy
https://youtu.be/gVjmzbnCHZA

Do you remember the beginning of abstract art? Back then, 100 years ago, it was tightly bound to music. How to relate with it today? The video is a comprehensive experience resulting from processing the visual data of the paintings into music. Melodies and rhythms are derived from elements of the images. The process is made visible in the simultaneous transcription of the score, and its relation to the painting is translated graphically enclosing its shapes. In this way pieces of abstract art unveil and sing their secrets to the viewer and the listener.

  THE WORD FOR FREEDOM

Egle Oddo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1K1JjN4LGM
Project: The Ark of Seeds

The Word For Freedom is an installation-performance developed in the context of The Ark of Seeds project. The video documents part of the narrative ritual which central acts are finding and sharing food with the audience and a plant seeds offer.
The story: A totem resembling a plant is built at the center of a village. The community lives by it and with it celebrates rituals of prosperity. During a famine, two strangers aerial people land on the totem and invite the villagers to open it. When they do it, a vibration runs through its metal body revealing the solution to the famine: food and new seeds.
The community gathers and share the new seeds and makes a pact of solidarity with the strangers and with the plants.

The central object of the ritual is the totem wich is at the same time an hardware for aerial acrobats, a seeds container and a string music instrument six meters high. All the sounds of the ritual originate from the sculpture. This instrument called Seeddom is an invention by Egle Oddo developed together with Timo Tuhkanen.

  ZERO SUM SITTING

Jack Pavlik
https://vimeo.com/134014361
https://vimeo.com/142807429

I am an artist that is interested in the relationships between competing forms and actions. I investigate aspects of competition, confinement, and displacement and portray them in moving structures. My recent work is interactive and incorporates performance into the overall effect, and the act of using people to perform with sculptural objects has added elements of surprise, individual personality, and failure to my work. In these new sculptural forms I have focused on simple object to re-contextualize, the steel folding chair. The folding chair’s binary nature, being either open or closed, and an individual’s ability to fit and conform into this mechanism is at the core of how this work relates to the viewer. The intervention of this object turns it into a symbol and prop for portraying the nature of competition in how it relates to the concept of the “zero sum game”. This idea reflects on an aspect of human interaction, that the systems of competition often force one individual to lose in an equal degree to another person’s profit. In addition this common object, when it is sculpturally altered provokes discussions about change, instability, and unease in people’s lives. One can observe in these sculptural performances that one person’s action is often something that is acted against by another individual. This is portrayed by the actions and reactions of performers as they attempt to change and occupy the space of appropriated objects that I have altered into interactive sculpture.

The videos I have produced have become a major component in the creation of this work. Video makes the movements and actions of the performers and objects symbolic, and the spare background used forces the viewer to focus on the direct relationship between person and sculpture, and with the participation of a group of performers the act of portraying human behavior becomes potently real and concrete.

In the act of creating interactive sculpture from appropriated objects, I have created machines of human behavior using the basic concepts of movement, objects that people use, and how a space is occupied. These sculptural performances describe how actions by individuals and groups affect one another, but do so with a level of humor and surprise.

  PUNKHAUS MORPHOSIS

Melina Alexina Rantanen

Project: How to Inhabit a Transitory Space

PunkHaus morphosis is an animated history about my flat in Helsinki. Also the morphosis represents my recent life change from an architect to an art student. The house was built in 1940 and suffered a major damage during the war. The animation tells a metaphorical story of the flat; the construction, bombings at the war, re-construction and the numerous changes it has encountered during the years before it became my home. As a punk rocker I call my home the PunkHaus. I love skulls and my home is decorated with a lot of them.
