Proyecto: Temporality

Change is a given and ever-present quality within the existence of time. The Greek Philosopher Heraclitus expresses this in his metaphor: “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.” Existence in time thus is synonymous with permanent change.

The live generative audio-visual software environment ‘Temporality’ is
based on the idea of flux. Its natural prototype is the flowing of water in a river. Swirls and waves in water, as well as the correlating sounds of splashing and trickling, might occur time after time due to an underlying cause in the riverbed. The physical properties of nature itself however ensure no repetition, only ever new manifestations of the visual or acoustic spectacle.

As an audio-visual composition, ‘Temporality’ expresses this fluidity and continuous transformation. Its underlying generative structure thereby enables the constant modification of the parameters comprising the quality of each individual note, as well as the visual constellation linked to the flow of sound. Like the riverbed, the parameters shift with the sounding of each note, and thus alter any potential future manifestation.

No system however functions in isolation. ‘Temporality’ observes the wider
environment through a webcam input. The surrounding of the work itself thus
interacts with the timbre of the played notes.

In its entirety ‘temporality’ has no distinct spatial position, rhythm, timbre or
progression, but a flow of sound ebbing and swelling within time and space.

Proyecto: Impromptu X1

In this work the visual component consists of two still images generated from visualisations of singular surfaces obtained in recent research in algebraic geometry.

The music has an improvisatory character and is based on pre-recorded material performed by the author. There is a presence of certain common formal processes in the visual and sound parts.

Proyecto: Six small automata

Six small automata is a study on the interaction between six machines
inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci's projects about the cam hammer, the
winch, the millstone, the assault stair, the winepress and the sander. Such machines were adapted into an ad hoc-system and could be considered as a series of speakers, part of a communication device. Their activation, deactivation and entire operation is unpredictable, due to aleatoric control mechanisms. This study wants to explore, through both visuals and sound, how a few automata can generate an ever-changing motion, employing a simple interactive network.

Proyecto: Generative nights

Generative nights is an exploration of a dark urban world in which humanity struggles with infinitely replicating micro-machines. Their growth and bursts are hypnotic and scaring. It is your choice whether to enter the mob... or not!

Based on cellular automata, the first part of generative nights is a unique experience of mechanical audio and graphical patterns. The steady rhythms and the pixellized visuals combine into pictures that evoke industrial halls, cities at night, or biologist's lab bench. Humanity progressively takes control over the machine in the second part. The haunting vocals turn gigantic primitive totems into goddesses who take care of the city at night.

Moved by the shamanic rhythms of the loops, luminous vestals, dancers in the dark, and flying guardians, half yamakasi/half angels, haunt the buildings while the city asleep traverses its dreams of fame and wrath. Alas! mankind freed from its mechanical slavery is caught back by its demons of power and vanity in the last part of the piece. The drawing machine brings the performer's limbs into play but fails as Deus ex Machina. The hand of fate traps the melancholic solitary wanderer, its memory is nothing but a vanishing tattoo on a dusty ground...

The visuals and sounds are synesthetically coupled by equipping the visual display with sensors. They capture the "light" on the surface and convert it into sounds according to their positions on the display. Just think of the graphics as a huge sequencer of one million interconnected cells with light sensors that capture the activity in some selected places of the visual sequencer. Swarms and particles, spaceships followed by troopers, machine guns and gliders, the visual and sonic landscapes, combined with voice loops and chants, will certainly trigger your imaginary and embark you for an unforgettable journey with and against the machines.

Proyecto: FOLLOWERS

Followers is an audiovisual generative animation designed with Processing. The red dot doesn't know where it's going but the other ones blindly follow it, never getting out of the way. This erratic race doesn't lead anywhere but draws new senseless networks. However, the number of followers changes over time and eventually dries up. When the leader has lost all of his followers, another one takes over.
Display size: adjustable
Length: infinite

Proyecto: La maison sensible (The Sensitive House)

La maison sensible is an interactive installation that augments the physical space and the relationship between an onlooker and a fragile and subtle environment.

We use different types of discrete sensors to transform the walls, the furniture, the floor of an exhibition room staged as a living room, into delicate, sensible, sensitive, and reactive interfaces.

The idea is to create a work that will be revealed if the viewer enters the space being attentive and empathic to what is going on. It develops into a visual and auditive environment that mirrors the body by revealing an interactive audiovisual organic space on which spectators leave footprints experienced as scars by the physical room.

The floor and walls of this room are made up of hundreds of thousands of fragile video-projected particles. They are all quiet and nicely ordered when the room is empty and silent. Only a slight breathing motion is perceptible. They slowly and gently
draw mesmerizing figures.

Proyecto: Dinah Bird Box of 78s' - the radio record of a family record's
journey around the world

Radio On's Adrian Shephard and Rinus van Alebeek play and discuss Dinah Bird's A Box of 78s

“A leather box that is over eighty years old and has lived in three different countries, and on two different continents. It contains over fifty 78 rpm recordings of classical music and opera hits of the day. The box and its contents were inherited by Dinah Bird from her grandmother who was born on the Gulf Islands, British Columbia, in 1910.”

“Grandmother grew up on Salt Spring. She took the box with her when she left the island in 1925 and carried it to her various adult homes until her death in 2000. In September 2012 Dinah Bird retraced the box’s long journey and took the records back to the island where they were first played.”

“Using her great-grandfather’s diary and daily notes on the weather as a guide, She played the records outdoors, on a portable gramophone in spots around Salt Spring where her grandmother and her family had picnics, played tennis or danced.
Dinahrecorded what happened. She also talked to today’s Salt Springers, and her late Great Uncle, about their memories and reasons for being on the island.”

Tupak Katari I.

Proyecto: Optical Counterpoints Attributed to Surface Topography
in Clustered Forests

The artworks of Ryota Matsumoto develop and demonstrate the hybrid/multi-layered process, where varying scale, juxtaposition of different forms, intertwined textures/tones, and visual metamorphosis are applied to reflect the spatio-temporal conditions of our ever-evolving urban and ecological environments.

They are created to act as the catalyst for defining speculative changes in our notions of cities, socities and cultures.

The drawings explore a hybrid drawing technique combining both traditional media (ink, acrylic, and graphite) and digital media (algorithmic processing, scripting and image compositing with custom software ).

Software: Processing, Maya, 3D studio max, Rhino, Grasshopper,
Custom software plug-ins

Ryota Matsumoto is a principal of an award-winning design office, Ryota Matsumoto Studio based in Tokyo. He is an artist, designer and urban planner. Born in 1972, Ryota was raised in Hong Kong and Japan.
He received Master of Architecture from University of Pennsylvania in 2007 after studying at Architectural Association in London and Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art in early 90’s. His art and built work are featured in numerous publications and exhibitions internationally.
His current interest gravitates around the embodiment of cultural possibilities in art, architecture, and urban topography.

Proyecto: Circles

Circles is a generative, interactive audio/visual software piece. The artist uses SONAR sensors to detect viewers' presence and manipulate the key, melodies, and effects of the piece based on their proximity.

The piece also showcases the artist's pixel painting method. When a viewer engages the work, each video pixel turns into a small paintbrush, painting across the television like a canvas. As the visuals are generative, no two pixel paintings ever look the same.

Circles is a great fit for Espacio Enter because, not only do viewers interact with a screen, but the exhibit extends beyond it. The pixel paintings automatically upload to a Circles page online (on Flickr)- -acting as a dynamic documentation of the piece and filling screens anywhere in the world.
