Project: Davison Grant Genetics

Grant Genetics is a simulated biotech company using the Internet, digital prints, and performance as its primary forms of delivery. The inspiration for this project began to unfold in early 2007, and not unlike any corporation focused on global success, it has continued to rise and expand to this day. Initially, the frantic race to map and patent human DNA during the 1990’s was the most inspiring element for this project. Therein I found a complex framework to fabricate an artificial empire seemingly dedicated to healing and improving the human body through science and technology. The dream to live longer, be healthier, and appear more beautiful has been the conceptual strategy throughout the creation of this company, and one that arguably has relevance to every human being on the planet.

Project: An [Ec] centric Self-Portrait

An [Ec]centric Self-Portrait explores personal identity through photographic portraiture, creative writing, and interactive design. The composition brings together photographs from different periods of my life that were chosen to represent my relationship to common societal roles. These visual representations of identity are juxtaposed to narrative texts that reflect on each role, and which contain links to additional content. This material is situated in an interactive environment that allows audience members to explore and experience the information in individualized, nonlinear sequences.

Project: Where is Lourenço Marques?

In the landscape of colonial Portugal, Lourenço Marques was the the proud capital of the province of Mozambique. This work is devoted to those who lived and inhabited that time and place, in a city which since its independence in 1975, became known as Maputo.

Many of those inhabitants left Mozambique for social and political reasons during the process of decolonisation. More than material goods and possessions, the experiences of entire generations were also left behind. Most will never return and for many only a great disenchantment or nostalgia is left. For others, Lourenço Marques evokes memories of a magical space and time.
This work is a representation of the place of Lourenço Marques and a mediation of the memories of those who experienced the city, and who had to rush to abandon it in the three-year period between 1974 and 1976. This memorial takes expression in a mosaic of voices combining multiple forms of representation, a 3D virtual world available at www.lourencomarques.net.

During a preliminary stage, a community of 'retornados' was interviewed. From the descriptions and materials shared during this process of interviews [such as oral-accounts, drawings, photographs and songs] a virtual place was built to be inhabited by a community of autonomous story-tellers.  These story-tellers mediate and transmit to the audience the oral accounts of the participants.

Project: To those who go

“To those who go” is a public art project by Ximena Labra for those and about those who will travel. Not only in space and time, but also in their minds, those who travel are willing to go beyond their usual surroundings. They are the seekers. Therefore, they find.  It is the will of discovery that makes us human beings find out who we are and what the universe is made of.

This is a project about people who went and saw, the ones that have gone further and shared their discoveries, their dreams, their revelations.  But it is also a project for the ones that are going today, -in spite of everything and because of everything the world is about- to find and to see, to do and to be… what they are. Around 25,000,000 people will visit the Denver International Airport during this project´s existence.  From December 2012 to August 2013, the airport will display many great quotes about travels and travelers on different areas, and from great halls to toilets, all passengers will be able to enjoy them.

Also, there is an online collection of  books for anyone to download from the free airport wifi in this website.  One moment, or many hours of delight for every passenger that can read or listen is what this project is about. This piece was actually made inside Denver International Airport.

Project: RGB
