Project: FOLD

FOLD is the second video from my current series of works called Video Choreographies, the mass repetition of small videos magnifies subtle nuances while blurring the whole ensemble into a mass of activity. For instance, the elementariness of simple gestures, such as those of folding a t-shirt, or putting hair behind the ear, get morphed into a complex choreography when multiplied. The effect of this process is mirrored in the dense and rich textured sound that emerges from the the layering of the audio from the individual videos.

Project: Deck
Inside the boat, the protective womb of the ship erases the traces of the outside. But beyond the barricade, the sea roars. The corroded, wind-blown deck, trembling with seawater, seems like a liminal space between the human and the wild.
This very simple piece is a portrayal of the deck of a sea ferry in rough water.

Project: Broken Windows

Broken Windows consists of the last footage shot with a digital camcorder: these are the dying gasps of the camera. On one level, the piece might serve as a de-mystification of the digital image; the degradation of the footage broadly implies the processes by which the real world is interpreted as video. Video’s constitution of the world as image is laid bare, and it is disconcerting to see the torturous decay of the material as the camera fights to maintain its simulation of the world.
On another level, however, the piece implies the impossible mystery of most technology for most viewers. The functioning of the camera, evident in the image only when it fails as here, is something which most of us, can’t or don’t want to, understand. We comprehend technology so little, that we must engage with it on a purely aesthetic level as a source of magic or wonder.

Project: Representa Corisco 2010

Project: Chiros

The Chiros video project is based on interviews with HIV+ women speaking about how their perception of time has changed since becoming positive. There can be an urgency related to chronological time: days are governed by medication schedules and the pursuit of goals in a race against their body. This is often punctuated by welcomed interruptions from Chiros, a perceived suspension of time during happy moments, as when one loses oneself in moments with friends and family. Many of the women describe paying very little attention to time before being positive, but are now actively engaged with it, feeling the time cherished with loved ones pull against the clock. For many of the women, time seemed to be measured by their family and the growth and accomplishments of their children.
The project began with a video production workshop for HIV+ women in conjunction with CAMBA.org\'s public voice program. The women created video essays about their relationship to time and explored time-based work
as a means of empowerment. They also created their personal video essays, and an open course curriculum that can be used and augmented by the public.
The single channel video is an experimental, animated documentary, which contrasts the women\'s personal descriptions of struggle with shimmering animated forms, that embody not only the complexities of their personality, but the different forms of time they are grappling with.
